The main building was restored after 30 years of abandonment and opened as a museum on September 10, 1990.
Through the years, this gateway to the new world was enlarged from its original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres by landfill supposedly obtained from the ballast of ships, excess earth from the construction of the New York City subway system and elsewhere.
Before being designated as the site of one of the first Federal immigration station by President Benjamin Harrison in 1890,

Due to its rich and abundant oyster beds and plentiful and profitable shad runs, it was known as Oyster Island for many generations during the Dutch and English colonial periods.
American Family Immigration History Center (AFIHC) at Ellis Island. Official site for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Foundation containing manifests of 25 million immigrants, passengers, and crew members who entered New York Harbor.

I was told by A first cousin of mine that my Grandmother, who passed through Ellis Island when she and my Uncle Tony, then her infant son, has her name actually listed on the wall there when they rejoined my Grandfather here! I have never been to Ellis Island, I have been to The Statue of Liberty and I always regretted not going to Ellis Island during that visit. One of these days I have to get there!

This is an amazing work of art, Jewel. My paternal grandfather and two of his brothers came through Ellis Island. My paternal grandmother also came through Ellis Island at a later date. I have both of their passports as they went back twice to โthe old countryโ to visit relatives who had remained. My grandpa and grandma were married on July 3, 1903.
Thank you for showing us some patriotic spirit, which seems to be dying. ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ

My mom and dad came by Ellis Island and passed the Statue of Liberty on the ship they were on. Mom was pregnant with me, immigrants to a new country, with a baby on the way. It took the a lot of red tape and many years to finally get to come over. Incredible artistry as you never fail to wow with your talent!
